Changes to Education related databases

Over the next few weeks we will be releasing information regarding changes to the databases that Grasselli Library provides to John Carroll University. If you have any questions, please contact the library liaison in the appropriate subject area or call the Reference Desk (x4234).

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to Education Research Complete, offering the largest and most complete collection of full text education journals, covering areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. This replaces Education Abstracts and incorporates Ebsco’s Professional Development Collection. In addition, Grasselli now offers access to SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports: medicine, law, management, and education. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Changes to Social Sciences related databases

Over the next few weeks we will be releasing information regarding changes to the databases that Grasselli Library provides to John Carroll University. If you have any questions, please contact the library liaison in the appropriate subject area or call the Reference Desk (x4234).

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to International Political Science Abstracts. This replaces PAIS International and Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. SocINDEX is now SocINDEX with full-text. Other new databases include the Bibliography of Native North Americans, Gender Studies Database, and GLBT Life with full-text. Women’s Studies International replaces Contemporary Women’s Issues.

Finally, Grasselli Library now offers Environment Complete containing all of the content available in Environment Index, as well as full text for 400 journals, including many of the most used journals in the discipline, such as Environment (back to 1975), Ecologist, Conservation Biology, etc. Environment Complete also provides full text for 80 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes), Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management, etc. Further, the database offers full text for the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education.

These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Changes to Databases related to Law

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to Ebsco’s Legal Collection. This replaces the Index to Legal Periodicals and Books. Also, the OhioLINK libraries have switched our subscription from Ohio Capitol Connection to Gongwer News Service for information about Ohio government and politics. Another addition is SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports, including sports law and legislation. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Changes to Sciences and Mathematics Related Databases

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to two new databases from Ebsco, Agricola and Garden, Landscape and Horticultural Index. These replace Applied Science and Technology Abstracts and Biological and Agricultural Index. Also from Ebsco, we have Environment Complete containing all of the content available in Environment Index, as well as full text for 400 journals, including many of the most used journals in the discipline, such as Environment (back to 1975), Ecologist, Conservation Biology, etc. Environment Complete also provides full text for 80 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes), Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management, etc. Further, the database offers full text for the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education. The final change is that the Computer Source database has been replaced by the company with Computers and Applied Sciences Complete, incorporating Computer Science Index, Computer Source, and Information Science & Technology Abstracts, and Internet & Personal Computing Abstracts. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

291 New Videos Added to Digital Media Collection

With the addition of 291 new digital videos from Ambrose Video Publishing, OhioLINK’s Digital Video Collection now offers 1,842 educational videos that you can show in class, link to from course pages and utilize for research. The new videos cover a wide variety of subjects.

The OhioLINK Digital Video Collection is available to all students, faculty members and staff at OhioLINK member institutions. The videos are available for viewing and downloading (for temporary storage only). Free software from RealNetworks is needed to view these videos. The current version of this software, called "RealPlayer," is available.

Grasselli Library schedules additional informal 30-minute classes on e-books and wikis

Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center has scheduled three more summer classes.

ELECTRONIC BOOKS. Next Wednesday, July 26 at 12:15 Ruth Connell will introduce you to our e-Books. The Grasselli Library collection has over 15,000 e-book titles. The JCU community can access these titles 24/7 from on or off campus. Where can you find them? What value are they to your research?

WIKIS. Wednesday 8/2 at 12:15 and Wednesday 8/9 at 2. George Leggiero. A wiki is a type of website that allows users to easily add or edit most content. This new type of interactive website is a great tool for collaborative writing. The best known wiki is Wikipedia , a free online encyclopedia edited by users worldwide. This class will show some popular wikis, explain how they work, and how you can start your own free wiki site.

All classes will take place in the library's electronic classroom on the upper level.

Changes to Health Professions Databases
Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, has upgraded the CINAHL database to include full-text of hundreds of journals. In addition, we now have pre-CINAHL, which provides pre-publication access to articles before they are added to CINAHL, and MedicLatina, a Spanish-language database of medical research journals. Grasselli Library now has access to SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports, including sports medicine. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

American Council of Learned Society's History e-Books are online to Grasselli Library patrons

The ACLS History E-Book Project is a collaboration of eight learned societies, nearly 75 contributing publishers, and librarians at the University of Michigan’s Scholarly Publishing Office. The result is an online, fully searchable collection of high-quality books in history, recommended and reviewed by historians and featuring unlimited multi-user access. The Project is available 24/7 on- and off-campus through standard web browsers. The ACLS History E-Book Project was initially funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The collection contains over 1200 books and the goal is to add 250 more each year.

Changes to Grasselli Library's Online Business Databases

Changes to Business Databases
Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, has upgraded our primary business-related bibliographic database from Business Source Premier to Business Source Complete. This upgrade brings more full-text coverage plus indexing and abstracting back to 1886 and a more comprehensive cited-reference search capability.
The OhioLINK libraries have added several databases (Economia y Negocios, a Spanish language database focusing on business and economics; Insurance Periodicals Index, which indexes and abstracts over 200 of the most respected and widely-read insurance industry journals and magazines; and SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports, medicine, law, management, and education) and cancelled one, Business & Industry. Mintel Reports are a new locally subscribed database of market research reports covering US and International marketplaces. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Reference eBooks Available Online

The library's online Electronic Reference Books Collection is a great resource for when you need a quick fact, illustration or overview of a topic. The collection now contains 483 reference books, including encyclopedias, handbooks, biographical collections and guides. A handy search tool lets you search the text of all 483 books for your topic. You can also browse the eBooks by title or subject. Portions of the books can be printed or the text of an entire book downloaded to your desktop.

Oxford English Dictionary Available @ Your Desktop

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is now available to all students, faculty and staff at OhioLINK institutions from OhioLINK and Grasselli Library. The OED is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is a guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. Some of the latest additions to the Oxford English Dictionary include: crowd-surfing, labradoodle and phishing. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is just one of several online quick reference resources--dictionaries, a thesaurus, encyclopedias, the World Almanac and more--that are just a click away from OhioLINK and Grasselli Library.

The World eBook Fair will work to promote eBooks around the globe. Library Offers Informal 30 minute Classes

The library offers a selection of 30-minute sessions throughout the academic year to highlight library services and explore new technologies. This summer’s sessions will look at digital media databases, RSS feeds, and blogs. Each half hour session will provide basic info and allow time for your questions and some hands on practice. No need to sign up in advance, just come and learn something new! All classes take place in the library's electronic classroom on the upper level of the library.

· Digital media databases—Grasselli patrons have 24/7 access to thousands of digital photos, videos, and sound files to enhance your projects, reports, and presentations. Where can you find them? How do you use them?
