The Antloga Family gives a legacy of service to Grasselli Library

Aside from being siblings, the Antlogas (Frank ’05, Kristina ’06, Tom ’09, and Andrea ’11) share another distinction. All four have worked at Grasselli Library as part of their work-study program. In 2002, Frank was entering his sophomore year at John Carroll University and seeking on- campus employment. His mother, Jennie, a staff member at Euclid Public Library, asked fellow employee Sheri Hoenig (who is also a part-time reference librarian at JCU), for advice. Sheri enthusiastically recommended employment in the library. Frank heeded the advice and began a legacy of library service that has been passed from sibling to sibling. The two sisters and two brothers have worked in both circulation and Interlibrary Loan. One of their supervisors, Ellen Valentine, attests to the tremendous work ethic and strong family values of all the siblings.

Kristina, a customer service representative at Progressive Commercial Auto, credits her experience working in the library for reinforcing that admirable work ethic. She even has fond memories of doing the jobs no one else relished, such as rolling up coins from the copy machines and sorting books. Tom, in his senior year and majoring in Information Systems, credits his work at the library for helping him improve his people skills by interacting with both patrons and supervisors. Andrea is working towards a degree in biology and has benefitted from learning about how the library functions behind the scenes. And where is Frank now? Frank is currently enrolled in the Master’s program in Library and Information Science at Kent State University while working at Euclid Public Library in both the Circulation Department and as a substitute Reference Librarian. Frank says, “What I really appreciated from working at the Grasselli Library was that I was able to enjoy its services and solitude as a student while also being able to give back and serve the missions of both the library and John Carroll University in my own way.”

Personnel changes at Grasselli—Database Maintenance Unit Leader and Acquisition Unit Leader

Grasselli Library is pleased to announce the successful candidates for our two open unit leader positions.

Mina Chercourt is our new Database Maintenance Unit Leader. In this faculty librarian position she will provide leadership in providing metadata for library materials in all formats. Mina comes to us with a wide variety of experience from the Cleveland Clinic’s Library.

Karen Ketchaver, who has worked in Acquisitions at Grasselli since 1996, has accepted the Acquisitions Unit Leader position. She now assumes oversight of the collections budget, including management of the fiscal records for the unit.

Grasselli Library announces new online databases

Over the summer there have been several changes to Grasselli Library's database list. We now have added access to the following resources:

World Book Web, the online version of the World Book Encyclopedia.
Biography Reference Bank which provides biographical information on approximately half a million people from antiquity to present, along with thousands of images.
Consumer Health Complete which provides convenient access to easily understandable health and medical information including medical encyclopedias, popular reference books, and magazine articles.
Science Online contains a broad range of scientific disciplines through extensive definitions, essays, diagrams, biographies, and experiments. This source, directed to K-12, should be especially useful for aspiring teachers.

These changes are part of the Libraries Connect Ohio (LCO) initiative, funded by a federal grant to the State Library of Ohio. Through this program a uniform set of databases is offered to most school, academic, and public libraries in Ohio. Grasselli Library Celebrates National Library Week

Suenens/Grasselli Book Series Presents Fr. Daniel J. Harrington, S.J.

The last Suenens/Grasselli Book talk of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2nd, at noon in the Faculty Dining Room. Fr. Daniel J. Harrington, S.J. is Chair of the Biblical Studies Department at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology and the author of thirty books and hundreds of articles for New Testament Abstracts, for which he serves as editor. Fr. Harrington's address will commemorate the gift to John Carroll of the Prophets edition of the St. John's Bible, the only handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the advent of printed books more than 500 years ago (www.saintjohnsbible.org). Fr. Harrington's specific topic will be "Afterlife in the Book of Wisdom."

Black History Month--Highlighting Grasselli Library Resources

February is Black History Month and Grasselli Library is highlighting items from its collections. If you need help locating any of the print or online sources or in viewing the streaming videos, contact a reference librarian at x4234.

The Encyclopedia Britannica's Guide to Black History presents a vast array of articles, hundreds of images, and a wide assortment of multimedia clips. This guide traces two millennia of Black history, and the browse features enable you to pinpoint the central people, places, topics, and events covered in Black History. This Spotlight has biographies on people such as Alvin Ailey, Matthew Henson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Hank Aaron. In addition, there is a subject browse that allows the user to look up people, places, issues, and events based on topic.

Grasselli Library's African-American Studies Resource Page , compiled and maintained by Grasselli Library librarian Jie Zhang, lists many excellent resources that support study and research on Black history and other topics in African-American studies.

Lastly, OhioLINK's Online Digital Video Collection contains the highly-acclaimed PBS series "Slavery and the making of America," and a number of other films of interest to students of African-American history.

New Library Exhibit Celebrates the 500th Anniversary of Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel Ceiling

A new exhibit in Grasselli Library, celebrates the work of Michelangelo in his magnificent frescoes of The Sistine Chapel. In 1508 Pope Julius II della Rovere commissioned Michelangelo to repaint the ceiling. He worked on the project between 1508 and October 31, 1512, in cramped conditions high on a scaffolding and under continuous pressure from the pope to hurry up. In recent decades, the Sistine Chapel has been carefully cleaned and restored.

Using books and videos available from Grasselli Library, the exhibit shows the beauty of this work and how it has been restored. The exhibit is outside the G.K. Chesterton Room on the upper level of the library near the main staircase.

Literary Expressions of Jewish Faith and Tradition--New library display

A new display in Grasselli Library highlights the literary expression -- fiction, drama, and poetry -- that has evolved from the faith and traditions of Judaism. The display was planned to coincide with the Let's Talk About It! Jewish Literature: Identity and Imagination reading series that began in September 2007 and will run through February 2008. To date over 40 participants have attended the book discussions which are led by Dr. Debby Rosenthal, Associate Professor, JCU Department of English.

The display is outside the library's Chesterton Room at the top of the main staircase on the upper level.

“Ruling Peacefully” is the first in-depth study of Renaissance Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga (1505-1563) who led a disordered personal life but who promoted serious religious and pastoral reform of the Church. Paul Murphy is Associate Professor of History and Director of John Carroll’s Institute of Catholic Studies. In addition to Ruling Peacefully, he is the author of many academic articles about the Society of Jesus. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of Toronto.

Java City Coffee Bar Opens at Grasselli Library

Java City is now open for business in Grasselli Library. Remodeling this summer made space for one of the library's newest services. The coffee bar is on the lower level of the library in the Breen Building and open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 11pm, Friday 11am to 3pm. Suenens Fall Book Series Presents Fr. Brian O. McDermott, S.J.

On Wednesday, September 26, noon-1:00p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room Fr. Brian O. McDermott, S.J. will discuss the book Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI.

Jesus of Nazareth has commanded world-wide attention and has enjoyed months on The New York Times best-seller list. The author's aim is to salvage the person of Jesus from recent "popular" depictions and to restore Jesus' true identity as discovered in the Gospels. The pope writes as theologian and believer and offers a rich compelling flesh-and-blood portrait of the central figure of the Christian faith.

Fr. Brian O. McDermott, S.J. is the rector of the Jesuit Community at Loyola College Baltimore and teaches theology at the college. He is the author of What are They Saying About the Grace of Christ? and Word Become Flesh:Dimensions of Christology. He holds a doctorate from the University of Nijmigen (Netherlands).

Library Exhibit--100 Years of Montessori Education

Come to Grasselli Library to view our new exhibit: "Celebrate 100 Years of Montessori Education," in honor of the 100-year anniversary of the opening of the first Montessori school. On display are information about the Montessori method of education and numerous actual materials used in Montessori schools today, provided by the Montessori School of University Heights.

The exhibit will be up from now through September, and is located on the upper level of Grasselli Library, at the top of the main stairway.

John Carroll Students and Faculty Gain Access to Theological Collections

John Carroll University students, faculty and staff now have access to one of the top ten largest theological collections in the United States from the Theological Consortium of Greater Columbus (TCGC). This access is possible because TCGC members, Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Pontifical College Josephinum and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, have recently joined OhioLINK. These additions bring the total number of OhioLINK members to 87, including 16 public/research universities, 23 community/technical colleges, 47 private colleges and the State Library of Ohio.

“Having access to these specialized collections will be a benefit to students and faculty of many disciplines here at Ohio State, including art, history, literature, music, religious studies and sociology.” Joe Branin, Director of the Ohio State University Libraries, said.

John Carroll University students, faculty and staff can now browse 360,000 theological books and other library materials, borrow items for up to 15 weeks, and pick up those requested items in just 2-3 days at a participating library. In addition, students, faculty and staff at Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Pontifical College Josephinum and Trinity Lutheran Seminary will gain access to the more than 46 million books and other library materials owned by OhioLINK member libraries and two Ohio public library systems.

“Being a part of OhioLINK allows us to support the research needs of our students and faculty in ways that we weren’t able to do before,” Monsignor Paul Langsfeld, Rector/President, Pontifical College Josephinum, said. “OhioLINK provides more library resources than any single library, especially a small library, could ever afford individually.”

The JCU community has had access to the Film and Television Literature Index since last summer. Grasselli Library now has added access to full-text books and articles in this resource.

Film & Television Literature Index with Full Text is the definitive online tool for film and television research. It is a comprehensive bibliographic and full text database covering the entire spectrum of television and film. Subject coverage includes film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews. The database provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 270 publications (and selected coverage of more than 300), as well as full text for more than 70 journals and nearly 50 books. The database has been designed for use by a diverse audience that includes film scholars, college students, and general viewers.

Online Resource Highlight--CIAO, Columbia International Affairs Online

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

CIAO is also widely-recognized source for teaching materials including original case studies written by leading international affairs experts, course packs of background readings for history and political science classes, and special features like the analysis of a bin Laden recruitment tape with video.

Going away from campus for the holidays and still need research materials? No problem. You can always pick up your OhioLINK books and other library materials at any participating OhioLINK library, including two public libraries: Cuyahoga County Public Library and Westerville Public library.

Here’s how:
1. Request an item from the OhioLINK Library Catalog.
2. Select your institution. Enter your name and ID barcode number.
3. Select a pickup institution from the list.
4. Select a pickup location at the pickup institution.

You’ll need to take your JCU ID card with you when you pick up your requested materials.

You can also use your JCU ID at any OhioLINK library to check out materials from their collections.

If you’re going out of the state for the holidays, remember you still have online access to more than 100 research databases, thousands of full text articles, 19,000+ e-books, 1,900 digital videos and much more from OhioLINK and Grasselli Library. All you need is your name and JCU ID barcode for access, anywhere, anytime.

OhioLINK Catalog Now Includes Over 10 Million Unique Titles

The OhioLINK Library Catalog now includes 10 million unique titles and a total of 45.5 million copies of books and other libraries materials. Ohio students, faculty, staff and others from participating libraries can request these items online and pick them up at any participating OhioLINK library in just two to three days.

To visualize how many items 45.5 million is, imagine a bookshelf that stretches from Columbus to Portland, Maine. That would be 878 miles of shelf space, just twenty miles short of the amount needed to accommodate all 45.5 million items.*

The 10,000,000th title is Mexican Modern: Masters of the 20th Century, essays by David Craven and Luis-Martin Lozano. It was added by The Ohio State University Libraries this month.

But don’t forget, these 45.5 million physical library items are just the beginning of what OhioLINK and Ohio’s academic libraries offer students, faculty and staff. Rock and Roll Radio Exhibit Opens Today!

ROCK and ROLL RADIO

Before the iPod, before the Walkman, there was the transistor radio. Heralded as a technological triumph in the 1950s, the transistor radio ushered in the era of Rock and Roll while changing the way we listened to the radio. Come see a collection of over 20 examples of 1950s and 60s transistor radios, including the one that started it all. The radios are on loan from the collection of David and Ellen Valentine.

The display is on the upper level of Grasselli Library at the top of the main staircase.

While there, check out the new Grasselli Library/Heights Libraries Leisure Reading Collection just down the hall and find a good mystery to curl up with on a chilly fall evening.

The cost of paper and toner to supply the open computer labs on campus is soaring. Did you know that in Grasselli Library alone, students printed almost 1million pages last year and that it cost over $15,000.00 to keep the printers supplied with toner?

Here are some ways YOU can help cut down on wasted paper and toner:

Use print preview before printing from MS Office or Internet Explorer. Be sure that what you’re about to print is what you really want.

Printers 1 and 2 in the Grasselli Library Computer Commons and both reference computers are duplexing, i.e. they print on both sides of the page. Please use these printers by default

If you are making corrections to a paper, print out only the corrected pages rather than reprinting the entire document.

Printer 3 in the Computer Commons will print single-sided copies. You can use this printer to print a final copy of a paper to turn in to your professor if a one-sided copy is required.

Please urge your instructors to accept assignments electronically through Blackboard so you don’t have to print them in the first place.

Urge your instructor to post your PowerPoint presentations on the class Blackboard site rather than printing multiple copies in the computer lab as class handouts.

If you must print PowerPoint slides, be sure to print them six slides per page and duplexed (2 sided printing).

If you are downloading articles from Grasselli Library Electronic Reserves or from our online journal collections, consider downloading the electronic file to your laptop, flash drive or network folders rather than printing them out. You can keep these copies for personal use and they will be much easier to carry around. You can also email copies of these articles to yourself to retrieve or download later.

Leisure Reading Collection Returns October 2nd with Heights Library Partnership

Two years ago we were forced to discontinue our leased leisure reading collection due to budget considerations. Since then we have heard from many that they missed being able to browse recent popular fiction, non-fiction and biographies at Grasselli Library as leisure reading selections. We received many of these comments in our Lib-Qual+ survey last year. We heard you!

We’re happy to say that we’ve entered into a partnership with Heights Libraries who will provide us a leisure reading collection at no charge to be available to the JCU community through Grasselli Library. The initial collection is several hundred books and audio books. The selection can be adjusted as we get to know your preferences.

To check out these books, you will need a local public library card. If you don’t have one, or need to check the status of an unused card, stop by the Grasselli Circulation Desk and we can help you to be ready for our October 2^nd launch date. JCU students can use their campus address to be eligible for a local public library card.

30-Minute Info Sessions for Fall 2006

Grasselli Library offers a selection of 30-minute info sessions throughout the academic year to highlight library services and explore new technologies. This fall’s first series will offer info you need to know to get off to a good start this year. Faculty can learn about linking E-content to course pages. Graduate students who have been away from library research for a number of years can drop in on a refresher course that will explain some of the ways research is done in the 21st century. Students and all JCU community members can learn about Interlibrary loan and electronic journals. A series of Technology Tuesdays for all campus users will look at finding digital media, wikis, and techniques to improve one’s use of photos, videos, and graphics. Each half hour session will provide basic info and allow time for your questions and some hands on practice. No need to sign up in advance, just come and learn something new!

Complete Online Access to The Chronicle of Higher Education for the entire JCU community

The Chronicle of Higher Education is the number one news and job-information source for college and university faculty members, administrators, and students. The Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center now has an online subscription to The Chronicle of Higher Education for the entire John Carroll community.

It is now possible for JCU faculty, staff and students to browse the Chronicle Online and read all of the articles without the use of a Chronicle user name and password. You can find links to The Chronicle in the database area of the library website and in the news links on the Grasselli Browser Toolbar.

In addition, you can search past issues of the Chronicle since 1989 and read full text of articles since 1995 through the same site. Click here for a summary of what you can access.

You can also subscribe to several Chronicle news and job-related RSS feeds through your RSS news aggregator.

This service is available both on campus, and from off campus by authenticating with your name and the library barcode from the back of your JCU ID.

Grasselli Library Invites Visitors to One of Three Open Houses

The faculty and staff of Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center invite visitors to drop in at one of our Open Houses next week:

Tuesday, September 5 from 11 AM to 1 PM
Wednesday, September 6 from 6 PM to 8 PM
Thursday, September 7 from 3 PM to 5 PM

Take the opportunity to meet members of the Grasselli Library staff and learn a bit about our services and resources. We’ll have snacks and bottled water on hand for all visitors.

At the open house, students will also be able to register the library barcode on the back of your JCU ID card with the Grasselli Circulation Desk. Once you do this you will have full access to the library’s online databases and OhioLINK borrowing privileges. In addition, freshmen who register their barcode during the open house will be entered in a drawing for dozens of prizes which include gift cards from area merchants and library fine waiver certificates worth $5 each. The drawing will take place on Thursday, September 7^th at 5 PM and the winners announced on Friday the 8^th. Students don’t need to be present at the drawing to win, but do need to stop by one of the open houses to be part of the drawing.

Electronic Reserve Request Form Online

Faculty: A new form has been posted to the Grasselli Library web site. This is a request form to have an article posted to our E-Res electronic reserve system. The new form submits the same information as before, but can be completed using MS Word. This form can then be printed out, submitted and/or saved for future reference. Did you know you can read newspapers from Ohio and around the nation right from your desktop?

America's Newspapers contains the full text for 17 Ohio newspapers, including the Akron Beacon Journal, Toledo Blade, Cincinnati Enquirer, The Cincinnati Post, Dayton Daily News and The Plain Dealer.

America's Newspapers can also connect you to popular national papers like the Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Washington Post.

Newspaper Source is another good place to try. It contains selected full text for 245 regional U.S. newspapers, eighteen international newspapers, six newswires, nine newspaper columns, and cover-to-cover full text for The Christian Science Monitor and The Los Angeles Times.

New Online Film & Television Literature Index

We now have access to the Film & Television Literature Index from EBSCO. Later this year, it will be upgraded to the Full Text version. Film & Television Literature Index is a comprehensive bibliographic database covering the entire spectrum of television and film writing. It has been designed for use by a diverse audience that includes film scholars, college students, and general viewers. Publications include Film Journal International, Journal of British Cinema & Television, Film Criticism, Post Script, Variety, and more as well as technical publications such as SMPTE. Mirroring the international film & television industries and cultures, FTLI also includes publications such as Cahiers du Cinema, Filmihullu, SegnoCinema, and Kinetoscopio. Over the past few weeks we've posted information regarding changes to the databases that Grasselli Library provides to the John Carroll University community. If you have any questions, please contact the library liaison in the appropriate subject area or call the Reference Desk (x4234).

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to Ebsco’s Literary Reference Center, a comprehensive database that provides users with a broad spectrum of information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes. Includes plot summaries, author biographies, author interviews, book reviews, poems, short stories, and images. In addition, Grasselli has bought Gale’s Literature Resource Center and Scribner Writers Series . The Literary Resource Center contains biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world. It incorporates other Gale series, such as Contemporary Authors, the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and most of the literature criticism series. The Scribner Writers Series includes 15-20 page signed essays on more than 1,600 authors and literary genres drawn from 13 acclaimed Scribner print series. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Guidelines for Creating Effective Library Assignments

Throughout the summer, Grasselli Library is keeping the John Carroll University community informed of the new online resources and services now available through the library web pages. This fall, students will find that their access to full-text and bibliographic databases has greatly expanded. As faculty prepare for fall classes, now is an excellent time to consider or to reconsider a library-related assignment.

We've created some guidelines that can help make library assignments more effective. These guidelines were developed by librarians for creating more effective library-related assignments. The information is based on experiences we have had with helping students. Also included are some links to sample assignments and to Web evaluation criteria. We hope you will find these guidelines helpful.

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, is pleased to upgrade Art Abstracts to a full-text version and Humanities International Index to the full-text Humanities International Complete. This upgrade replaces Humanities Abstracts. Grasselli Library offers a new database, the Literary Reference Center, providing information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes. The International Bibliography of Theater & Dance with full-text also takes its place on the database list this summer. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to Education Research Complete, offering the largest and most complete collection of full text education journals, covering areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. This replaces Education Abstracts and incorporates Ebsco’s Professional Development Collection. In addition, Grasselli now offers access to SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports: medicine, law, management, and education. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Changes to Social Sciences related databases

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to International Political Science Abstracts. This replaces PAIS International and Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. SocINDEX is now SocINDEX with full-text. Other new databases include the Bibliography of Native North Americans, Gender Studies Database, and GLBT Life with full-text. Women’s Studies International replaces Contemporary Women’s Issues.

Finally, Grasselli Library now offers Environment Complete containing all of the content available in Environment Index, as well as full text for 400 journals, including many of the most used journals in the discipline, such as Environment (back to 1975), Ecologist, Conservation Biology, etc. Environment Complete also provides full text for 80 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes), Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management, etc. Further, the database offers full text for the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education.

These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

Changes to Sciences and Mathematics Related Databases

Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, now has access to two new databases from Ebsco, Agricola and Garden, Landscape and Horticultural Index. These replace Applied Science and Technology Abstracts and Biological and Agricultural Index. Also from Ebsco, we have Environment Complete containing all of the content available in Environment Index, as well as full text for 400 journals, including many of the most used journals in the discipline, such as Environment (back to 1975), Ecologist, Conservation Biology, etc. Environment Complete also provides full text for 80 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes), Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management, etc. Further, the database offers full text for the conference papers of the North American Association of Environmental Education. The final change is that the Computer Source database has been replaced by the company with Computers and Applied Sciences Complete, incorporating Computer Science Index, Computer Source, and Information Science & Technology Abstracts, and Internet & Personal Computing Abstracts. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John CarrollÂs curricular needs.

With the addition of 291 new digital videos from Ambrose Video Publishing, OhioLINK’s Digital Video Collection now offers 1,842 educational videos that you can show in class, link to from course pages and utilize for research. The new videos cover a wide variety of subjects.

The OhioLINK Digital Video Collection is available to all students, faculty members and staff at OhioLINK member institutions. The videos are available for viewing and downloading (for temporary storage only). Free software from RealNetworks is needed to view these videos. The current version of this software, called "RealPlayer," is available.

Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center has scheduled three more summer classes.

ELECTRONIC BOOKS. Next Wednesday, July 26 at 12:15 Ruth Connell will introduce you to our e-Books. The Grasselli Library collection has over 15,000 e-book titles. The JCU community can access these titles 24/7 from on or off campus. Where can you find them? What value are they to your research?

WIKIS. Wednesday 8/2 at 12:15 and Wednesday 8/9 at 2. George Leggiero. A wiki is a type of website that allows users to easily add or edit most content. This new type of interactive website is a great tool for collaborative writing. The best known wiki is Wikipedia , a free online encyclopedia edited by users worldwide. This class will show some popular wikis, explain how they work, and how you can start your own free wiki site.

All classes will take place in the library's electronic classroom on the upper level.

The ACLS History E-Book Project is a collaboration of eight learned societies, nearly 75 contributing publishers, and librarians at the University of Michigan’s Scholarly Publishing Office. The result is an online, fully searchable collection of high-quality books in history, recommended and reviewed by historians and featuring unlimited multi-user access. The Project is available 24/7 on- and off-campus through standard web browsers. The ACLS History E-Book Project was initially funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The collection contains over 1200 books and the goal is to add 250 more each year.

Changes to Business Databases
Grasselli Library, along with the other OhioLINK members, has upgraded our primary business-related bibliographic database from Business Source Premier to Business Source Complete. This upgrade brings more full-text coverage plus indexing and abstracting back to 1886 and a more comprehensive cited-reference search capability.
The OhioLINK libraries have added several databases (Economia y Negocios, a Spanish language database focusing on business and economics; Insurance Periodicals Index, which indexes and abstracts over 200 of the most respected and widely-read insurance industry journals and magazines; and SPORTDiscus, dealing with all aspects of sports, medicine, law, management, and education) and cancelled one, Business & Industry. Mintel Reports are a new locally subscribed database of market research reports covering US and International marketplaces. These changes, coupled with our existing database subscriptions, will increase the amount of material available to faculty and students in support of John Carroll’s curricular needs.

The library's online Electronic Reference Books Collection is a great resource for when you need a quick fact, illustration or overview of a topic. The collection now contains 483 reference books, including encyclopedias, handbooks, biographical collections and guides. A handy search tool lets you search the text of all 483 books for your topic. You can also browse the eBooks by title or subject. Portions of the books can be printed or the text of an entire book downloaded to your desktop.

Oxford English Dictionary Available @ Your Desktop

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is now available to all students, faculty and staff at OhioLINK institutions from OhioLINK and Grasselli Library. The OED is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is a guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. Some of the latest additions to the Oxford English Dictionary include: crowd-surfing, labradoodle and phishing. Library Offers Informal 30 minute Classes

The library offers a selection of 30-minute sessions throughout the academic year to highlight library services and explore new technologies. This summer’s sessions will look at digital media databases, RSS feeds, and blogs. Each half hour session will provide basic info and allow time for your questions and some hands on practice. No need to sign up in advance, just come and learn something new! All classes take place in the library's electronic classroom on the upper level of the library.
